Meet the Pergola family and find out how learning to code at CodeWizardsHQ has led Ryan to be our Student of the Month!
“I learned coding at a young age and it has had a positive impact on my life. As the world around us becomes more digitized, understanding how software works is an important skill. I hope that my children learn to code and can apply that knowledge to be successful in life.” – Ryan’s Parents
Ryan’s Favorite Projects:
CodeWizardsHQ’s community spreads around the world. We are lucky to have amazing families like the Pergola family!
Ryan and her family were kind enough to answer a few questions about their coding adventure.
Ryan’s Answers
Q. What’s your coding background?
I have done some block coding in school and I programmed with Ruby for a while before CWHQ.
Q. What are some things you like about learning to code with CWHQ?
I like that all of my teachers are nice and the classes are small so they have time to work individually with each student if they need help.
Q. What are your family’s hobbies?
Skiing, traveling, camping, and hiking.
Q. What subjects do you enjoy in school?
I enjoy Social Studies and Spanish.
Q. Anything else fun and interesting you’d like to share about your family?
My family spent two weeks this summer camping and hiking in Wyoming and Montana. We took this picture on a 7.6-mile hike to Grinnell Glacier. I am the one in the middle.
Ryan’s Parents’ Responses:
Q. How did you find out about CodeWizardsHQ?
We came across CWHQwhile doing an internet search for teacher-led coding options for kids. We signed Ryan up as a Christmas gift and we have been pleased with our experience to date.
Q. Do you have a specific experience or story you’d like to share that your student has shared related to your classes at CWHQ?
Ryan has been incorporating the skills he has learned at CWHQ into his daily school work. For example, Ryan is working on a project right now to create a virtual reality that shows how early settlers lived for his history class.
Q. How do you think coding is going to impact your family in the future?
We love to travel as a family. We are hoping that Ryan can develop his coding skills well enough so that he can work with his brother and sister to create a website to share our travel itineraries with other families. The website would create a new opportunity for us to work together as a family to plan, document and share our experiences with family and friends, as well as become an example for our children on how they can apply their coding skills to everyday life.
Q. What goals or dreams do you have around coding for your children?
I learned coding at a young age and it has had a positive impact on my life. As the world around us becomes more digitized, understanding how software works is an important skill. I hope that my children learn to code and can apply that knowledge to be successful in life.
Ryan has graduated from Python, HTML/CSS, and soon JavaScript in the middle school coding program.
Here is what his teacher, Tyler Crocker, had to say about him:
“Ryan is one of those students who challenges my knowledge every class with questions from our classwork but also from concepts he looks up outside of class. He was one of those students that learned how to teach himself very early in our curriculum and his questions often piqued the interest of other students in my classes with him. I look forward to seeing his further growth as a programmer. ”
