This month, we bring you Sabreena Osborne!
Who/what inspired you to become a coding teacher?
Nothing inspired me to be a coding teacher in particular. I’ve always had a love of teaching, especially younger people. I am self-taught with code, so when the opportunity came to do both, it was fantastic!
What has been the most rewarding part of teaching?
The most rewarding part of teaching is when you can see/hear the little “lightbulb” go off for someone. That “AHA!” moment when something clicks is so satisfying!
What is your favorite project in the classes you teach?
My favorite project varies, but usually Ghostbusters from our Intro to Programming Class. Other favorites are the pirate game from our Front End Development Class, and our HTML/CSS final project Fortune Cookie.
What is your vision for the future of coding and kids?
My vision is students using the coding through all aspects of their life, not just if they plan to go in to computer science or engineering as a career. It can teach them how to pay very close attention to detail, how to problem-solve, how to “speak” a different language, and make sure to be very specific in instructions to get the result they expect.
When you aren’t teaching, what do you enjoy doing?
When I’m not teaching, I love to play with my doggos, spend time with my family, travel, and nerd out in every way possible. I have been known to cosplay at Comicons!
If you could have one teacher super-power, what would it be?
If I had one teacher super-power, it would be the ability to teach any student who has a desire to learn, and to be able to inherently teach in the way the student learns best.
What do you think is the most important thing about teaching coding to kids?
The most important thing about teaching coding to kids is to make sure it’s fun! Coding can be so grey, literally and figuratively. If you don’t make it fun, it can’t be for everyone. And it should be for everyone!
